When purchased by the Client, the cottage was in a severely dilapidated condition, with the timbers suffering not only from extensive wood-boring insect attack, but also severe distress as a result of movements following the decay of the sole-plate. The condition of the building had been further worsened by a fire, some two years previous, following which the original thatch was replaced with a plain-tiled roof on new rafters, not properly framed in to the original construction. O’Brien & Price Cheltenham provided advice to the Client and Contractors on the means necessary to restore the integrity to the building, including undertaking a full structural appraisal to prove the adequacy of the framing, together with detailing the remedial work, particularly to the joints.
